Children's services Response to COVID-19

Orange Grove School is happy to welcome back our students for the 2021-22 school year! Last year was a challenging one, but we made it, and now we hope to have a year that's more like it ought to be. The entire Orange Grove School team is working hard to be sure we can have a safe, productive, and full school year.

To do that, we will follow our already established COVID-19 protocols. Your student's safety needs are always our top priority! Continue reading for an overview of our response plan.

  • Health and Cleanliness

    COVID-19 Screening

Orange Grove screens for symptoms and performs temperature checks of students and staff.  All students will undergo screening at least once per day, unless staff determines there is a need to check more often.

If a student has a fever of 100 or above and/or exhibits symptoms that could be consistent with COVID-19, Orange Grove staff will follow isolation and parent contact procedures.

Parents are required to pick up their child within one hour of receiving a call about sickness or exposure.

    Face Coverings

Orange Grove encourages all students to wear a face covering while in the school building. All Orange Grove staff are required to wear face coverings while in the building.

    Classroom Safety

Where applicable, Orange Grove will control exposure through classroom arrangement, material management and disinfection.

Classrooms will be structured to facilitate social distancing when possible. Barriers may be used when practical and possible. Due to the nature of instruction, it may not always be possible to maintain 6 feet of distancing. Orange Grove mitigates these risks by providing and requiring the use of PPE for staff.

Classrooms and high-touch surfaces will be disinfected regularly throughout the school day. Restrooms, therapy and lift equipment, and other common items will be thoroughly sterilized after each use.

  • Exposure Procedures

    COVID-19 Exposure

Any student or staff who has symptoms consistent with or who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 must isolate at home for a period of 14 days from symptom onset (or the date they were tested) AND must be fever-free (without the use of fever-reducing medications) AND without symptoms for at least 72 hours to return. This is not optional.

Any student or staff who has been a close contact (within 6 feet for more than 15 minutes) of a person with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 must quarantine at home for a period of 14 days from their last exposure to that individual. This is not optional.

For the safety of our school students and staff, parents should keep their child at home if they are ill or exhibit symptoms of COVID-19.  Any student or staff member with a fever of 100 degrees or greater, or who reports symptoms of COVID-19, should not be present at school.

  • Nursing, Medication, and Nutrition

Nursing services and medication administration will be available to students during school hours.  Medications will be given either in the School Nurses Station or within the classroom if necessary. Nurses will wear appropriate PPE.

Parents may deliver students’ medication and supplies to the Center by contacting the Orange Grove School Nursing Line at 423-876-8360 to schedule time to meet the nurse.

Meals will be served in classrooms or outdoor spaces rather than the cafeteria. Face coverings will not be worn while eating.

  • Attendance and Building Access

All curriculum will be offered in-person. In-person learning will continue unless circumstances dictate a need to restrict classroom attendance.

Parents will not be allowed to enter classrooms.  School staff only will escort students to and from the building. Parents and visitors to the Center will be strictly limited.

  • Transportation

Orange Grove will run bus service for students. Parents may choose to transport their student on their own.

Bus drivers and assistants will be required to wear appropriate PPE at all times.

We continue to reference guidance from the Hamilton County Health Department, the Tennessee Department of Health, and the CDC. We are monitoring the latest information to keep our children and staff safe and healthy.
