Carolyn Hernandez retires from Children\'s Services

Our warmest wishes to Carolyn Hernandez, who devoted a combined 42 years at Orange Grove since 1972.  Hernandez spent her first 5 years in the Child Day Care program.  After a three year hiatus, she returned in 1980 to Children's Services, where over the years she taught numerous children with special needs.

She was actively involved in Special Olympics for more than 25 years, Very Special Arts, and was instrumental in designing a summer garden for students at the Center so they could plan, plant and watch as their garden grew.  During her tenure, she was selected WTVC NewsChannel 9's "Teacher of the Week," and was awarded as the Ruth Keen Teacher of the Year, OGC Employee of the Month, and is a recipient of OGC's Spirit Award.

A graduate of Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA, Hernandez continuously learned more about the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities through teacher certifications, work-based learning programs, staff enrichment classes and symposiums.  She also participated in conferences, workshops and trainings to strengthen her knowledge of the children she served at Orange Grove, making her one of the Center's leaders in educating children as they transitioned through the program.

Carolyn's endurance, diligence and efforts to accommodate students and staff will sorely be missed.  Thank you, Carolyn, for your service to everyone here at Orange Grove.
